Implant Supported Dentures
- In this procedure first we place the implants that will hold denture firmly and provide a solid stable foundation. It gives peace of mind to the patient that their denture will not be slip or come out while speaking, eating or blowing the candle.
- After healing phase , an artificial top is placed over implant and it contains an attachment for the denture.
- It is estimated that implant supported dentures will restore nearly 90% chewing ability.
- There will be major improvement in fit and function by implants. In most patients, required number of implants are 2 on lower arch [ one on each side ] but it can be vary in patient to patient. We can also put implants on upper jaw for more stability.
Disadvantages of Removable Complete Denture
A removable full denture is quite difficult for plenty of patients because of instability in the mouth and it takes time for patient to get used to with it. Frequent ulcers due to sharp edges of denture and mobility especially of the lower denture due to constant forces of the toungue causes difficulty in chewing and gradually decreases the appetite of the patient.
As we know there are always pros and cons for everything so does have implants:
- Implants could be pricy for some patients.
- Patient has to be ultra careful for oral hygiene after implant placement to prevent further infection.
- Implant placement is a minor surgical procedure [ No need to afraid from it ]
